Places to stay
Options for wilderness camping (which requires a permit), camp and RV sites, canvas cabins, and luxury hotels. There are also options to stay just outside the park. For full details of in-park accommodation visit here, and for off-site accommodation, search below.
Yosemite
Yosemite is around 6-7 hours drive from Las Vegas, however make sure you check the driving conditions and road closures before you leave. The last stretch on highway 120 is mountainous terrain, including the Tioga Pass which is usually closed throughout the winter months due to snow (it can be closed anytime depending on conditions). The national parks website has regular updates on driving conditions. You must buy a pass when you enter the park – details available here.
A landscape shaped by glaciers
Yosemite is known for stunning mountain vistas, giant sequoia trees, waterfalls, lakes, wildflower meadows, and popular hiking and climbing routes including half dome and El Capitan. There are a wide range of hiking trails and climbing routes in the park, some more crowded than others. Rangers can offer advice on which ones are best suited to your time available and ability.
It is always worth checking in at a visitor centre before embarking on a hike to ensure there aren’t any trail closures, bad weather or wildlife warnings that may prove dangerous.
For those looking for more creative than adrenaline fuelled activities, the National Park Service offers Ranger and Interpretive programmes and Yosemite is home to the Ansel Adams Photography gallery.
